On first glance, one might be mistaken for thinking these are happy images, such is the intensity of the background tones that dominate the frames. But the subject’s troubled expressions tell a different story. Cursed for appearing in a dream. Or by a jealous neighbour whose cow suddenly died. Pictured are the women from the Kpatinga which camp. Excommunicated and accused of being witches or possessing witchcraft they were forced to abandon their family and village life. Having to live the remainder of their life in a spartan hut with no running water, electricity or loved ones. Kpatinga is one of the six designated witch camps spread over Northern Ghana. One of the few places where they are able to seek refuge from beating, torture or lynching. The accusations are most of the time based on sheer lies and very often a convenient way to get rid of somebody. The photographs are part of the series ‘Cursed’ and were taken to give a voice to the voiceless. To bring back some of the dignity these women lost while being accused. Helping in its own way to raise awareness of the injustices they had to and still have to undergo. Because we are all at the end entitled to a deserving life.
